About SelfEmploymentTaxCalc
SelfEmploymentTaxCalc was built for freelancers, 1099 contractors, and small business owners who need to understand their tax obligations without hiring an accountant for every question. Self-employment tax math — the 92.35% adjustment, the Social Security wage base, Additional Medicare Tax, quarterly deadlines — is scattered across IRS publications few people read cover to cover.
Our calculators translate those formulas into simple tools you can use before you file, or before you set aside money for next quarter's payment.
Our Approach
Every calculator here uses transparent, published IRS formulas — not a black box. We show our work: the adjustment applied, the wage base cap, and the rate used, so you can see exactly how a number was reached.
Who We Are
SelfEmploymentTaxCalc is a property of Berean Defense L.L.C., a company building practical, free tools for people navigating complicated financial situations.
Methodology & Sources
Every calculation on this site follows published federal formulas directly: self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) applied to 92.35% of net self-employment earnings, per IRS Topic No. 554. The Social Security wage base cap is sourced from the Social Security Administration, and Additional Medicare Tax rules come from IRS Topic No. 560. Where a figure changes from year to year (like the wage base), we source it directly rather than estimating — and where we're not confident a figure is current, we say so in plain language rather than guess.
This site's content has not yet been reviewed by a licensed CPA or Enrolled Agent. We're transparent about that: the calculators are built from the same public IRS and SSA sources anyone can check, but they haven't had a professional sign-off, and they don't replace one. Each calculator page links its specific sources at the bottom.
